Former police detective Ad rian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), w hose phot ographic m emory and am azing abili ty to piece t ogether tiny c lues made him a local leg end, h as suff ered from inte nsified obsessi ve-compulsive disorde r and a variety o f phobias since the un solved murder of his wife, Trud y, in 1997. Now on p sychiatric l eave fro m the S an Francisco Police Dep artment and w orking as a fre elance detec tive/ con sultant on di fficult ca ses, Monk hope s to co nvince his former boss, Captain Leland Stottlem eyer (T ed Levine) , to allow him to retur n to the forc e. Stott lemeyer, who wavered b etween admira tion for Monk a nd anno yance at his eccentricitie s during the first season, is bec oming more o f a fri end to Monk as the seri es deve lops, frequ ently calli ng him i n to help, as much fo r Monk' s benefit a s for his own. However, h e knows Mon k's limitations a s well as his str engths and may still har bor doubts ab out the wisd om of allow ing Monk to carry a gun or subdue a perpetrator. S tottlemeyer& ;#39;s second -in-command, L ieutenant Randall Disher (Jason Gray-St anford), also seems to be develop ing both ad miration and co mpassion fo r the man h e once labeled &quot ;the def ective dete ctive.&quo t; Despit e flaws and in adequacies all around, the three are be coming an inc reasingly e ffective te am, with additio nal help from Monk 's pe rsonal ass istant. But in the tenth ep isode of the third sea son, Sharo na was rep laced by a new assistan t, Natalie Te eger (Traylor Howard).
