Former pol ice det ective Adrian Monk ( Tony Shalhoub ), whose photo graphic me mory and amaz ing abilit y to piece together t iny clues made him a local legend, has suffered from int ensified obses sive-co mpulsive disord er and a variet y of phobias s ince the unsolv ed murder o f his w ife, Trudy, in 199 7. Now on psychiatric le ave from the Sa n Francisc o Police Depa rtment and working as a freelanc e detective/ consultant o n difficult c ases, Monk hopes to convi nce his former boss, Ca ptain Lel and Stottlemeye r (Ted Levine), to allow hi m to return to the force. St ottlemeyer, w ho wavered betw een admiration for Monk and annoyance at his ecce ntricities d uring the firs t season, is becoming mo re of a friend to M onk as the se ries deve lops, frequent ly calling hi m in to hel p, as mu ch for Monk&am p;#39;s be nefit as for his own. Howeve r, he kno ws Monk&#3 9;s limitati ons as well a s his streng ths and may still harbor doubts about the wisdom of allowing Monk to carry a gun or subdue a perpetrato r. From the doub le-episode pilot through the first half of seas on three, Mo nk was ai ded by his nurs e, Sharona F leming (Bit ty Schram) . But in the tenth episode of the third season, Sharo na was repl aced by a new a ssistant, Natali e Teeger (Tra ylor Howard ). Like Sh arona, a di vorcee with a s on named Benjy, N atalie i s a single par ent, a widow with a daughter named Julie (Emmy Cl arke).
