Former police d etective Ad rian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), w hose photo graphic memory and ama zing abili ty to piec e toget her tiny clu es made him a local legen d, has suff ered from i ntensified obse ssive-com pulsive disorder and a variety of phobia s since the unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, in 199 7. Now on ps ychiatric le ave fro m the San Franc isco Po lice Depart ment an d working as a freelance de tective/ consu ltant on difficu lt cases, Monk hope s to convinc e his former boss, Captain Le land Stott lemeyer (Ted L evine), t o allow him t o return to the force. St ottlemeyer, who wavered between admiratio n for Mon k and anno yance at his eccentri cities durin g the fi rst season, i s becoming more of a fri end to Monk as the series dev elops, f requently cal ling him in to he lp, as much for Monk& amp;#39;s be nefit as for his own. However, h e knows Mon k's l imitation s as well as hi s strengths an d may sti ll harbor doubts about t he wisdom of allowing Monk to car ry a gu n or subdu e a perpetrat or. Sto ttlemeyer 's sec ond-in-comm and, Li eutenant Rand all Disher (Jason Gray- Stanford), also seems to be developi ng both admi ration an d compass ion for the man he once labeled "t he defective detective ." D espite flaws a nd inad equacies a ll arou nd, the three are b ecoming an increasi ngly effectiv e team, with additio nal help from M onk&# 39;s personal assistant . From the dou ble-episo de pilot through the first half of season thre e, Monk was aided b y his nurse, Sharona Flemi ng (Bitty Schra m). But in the tenth epi sode of t he third season , Sharona was repla ced by a new assistant , Natalie Tee ger (Trayl or Howard). Lik e Sharona, a divo rcee wit h a son named B enjy, Natalie is a single par ent, a wi dow wit h a daughter named Julie (Emmy Clarke).
