Former pol ice detectiv e Adrian Monk (Tony Shalh oub), whose photogra phic me mory and amaz ing abilit y to piece to gether t iny clues mad e him a local legend, has suf fered from intensifie d obses sive-compu lsive dis order a nd a variety of phobia s since the un solved murd er of his wif e, Trudy, in 1997. N ow on p sychiatr ic leave from the San Fran cisco Police Department and working as a freelance de tective/ consultant on difficult cases , Monk hopes to convi nce his former boss, Captain Le land Stot tlemeye r (Ted Le vine), to al low him to retur n to the force . Stottle meyer, who w avered be tween admira tion for M onk and annoyance a t his ec centrici ties during the firs t season, is becomin g more of a friend to Monk as t he series devel ops, frequentl y calling him i n to help, as much for Monk& ;#39;s benef it as for his o wn. However, he knows Mo nk's li mitations as well as his s trengths and may still har bor doubts abo ut the wisdom of allowing Monk to carr y a gun or sub due a pe rpetrator. From the doubl e-episode pilot thr ough th e first half o f season three , Monk was aided by his nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitt y Schram) . But in the tenth episode of t he third season, Sharon a was replac ed by a new ass istant, Natali e Teeger (Tray lor Howard). Like Sh arona, a divorcee wit h a son named Benjy, Natalie is a single p arent, a widow with a daughter n amed Julie (Emmy Cla rke).
