Shortly before he is to wed, millionaire John Willis is visited by Dr. Harry S. Blair, a psychiatrist who informs him that years before he was married to Nancy, John's wife-to-be, and warns him that she is mentally unbalanced. Blair then relates the following story: After a whi rlwind ro mance in Flori da, Blai r marries Nancy and s tarts a psy chiatric p ractice in New York. O ne day, artist Norman Clyde comes to his offi ce and tells him that an innoce nt man is abou t to be execut ed in Sing Sing Prison an d that Nanc y is the ca use of his un just incarc eration. A d istraught C lyde then explains himse lf to a curiou s Blair: Th ree years befor e, Clyde meets Nanc y, whose maiden name wa s Monks, when she enrolls i n his art class . The moody Cly de soon falls in love with Nancy ' s honest charm and beauty. Nan cy, a secret ary, introdu ces Clyde to her boss, milli onaire Andrew Bonner, and persuades Bonne r to showcase C lyde's paintings at one of hi s private show ings. To Nancy&#39 ;s delight, Clyde&# 39;s paint ing, a depict ion of the tr agic figure Cas sandra for whic h she modeled , wins first prize at the s howing. The eveni ng is pe rfect unti l an expensive bracelet is sto len from a guest, and Clyde later finds i t in Nancy&a mp;#39;s purse . After Clyde confro nts a confused Nancy about the theft, she relates th e following s tory to expl ain her beh avior: As a yo ung girl, Nanc y lives with her hous ekeeper mother in the lavish Wi llis ho me and plays w ith Karen, t he Willises&a mp;#39; little daughter. Althoug h Karen wan ts to invite Na ncy to h er upco ming bir thday part y, Mrs. Willis refuses to allow the lowe r-class Nancy to attend. A tr ue friend, Kar en promises to give Nanc y one of the pins her gu ests are recei ving. Wh en Karen r ealizes t here are no e xtra pin s, howeve r, she offer s Nancy the be autiful lo cket she has just recei ved from her mother. Nancy's subsequent joy is soon cr ushed whe n Mrs. Willis demands that s he retu rn the locket . Later , the locket is discovered missing, and Nancy is acc used of t heft. Al though Nanc y' s mother soon f inds the lo cket in Karen 's d ress, Mrs. W illis re fuses to believe Na ncy and for ces her to & amp;quot;confe ss." The adult Nancy th en admits t o Clyde t hat thi s childhood hu miliation cause d her unconsci ous desi re to steal the bracelet a t the pa rty. After a forgiving Clyde re turns the bracelet a nonymously, he and Na ncy continue their roman ce until the next party at the Bonners&# 39;. Suspect ing that the absent Nanc y is spending the evening in Bon ner&#39 ;s arms, Clyde leaves the pa rty to look for her and s ees her exiti ng Mrs. Bonner& amp;#39; s bedroom just after t wo gunsho ts are fired . Bonner is fou nd murde red, and Mrs. Bonner& ;#39;s diam ond necklac e, stol en. Although Nancy and Cly de are question ed, valet Myron De xter is eventuall y found guilty and is sentence d to die. Cly de, howev er, str ongly su spects Nancy, but s he angrily maintain s her inno cence a nd leaves for Fl orida. Back in his office, B lair de fends Nancy to Clyd e but in vites him to his house tha t evenin g. When confr onted, N ancy denies e verythi ng and tells Blair t hat Clyde is merely jealous. The next day, Dexter is execu ted, a nd a gu ilt-ridden Cly de jumps fr om Blair&# 39;s of fice window to his de ath. To avoid s candal, Blair and Nanc y move to England, and after Worl d War II break s out, Bl air vol unteers his medical ser vices, while N ancy beco mes an ambul ance dri ver. Expr essing concern over Blair& ;#39;s health, Nancy in sists that the y take a vacat ion at Lord and Lady Wy ndham's manor hou se. Just as t hey are leav ing, B lair learns tha t one o f Lady Wyndha m's valuable j ewels has been sto len. Blai r suspects Nancy but is unable to prove anything until a bomb destroy s their fl at and reveal s her ca che of stolen jewels. Alth ough co nfronted dire ctly, Nan cy continues t o deny any guilt and di vorces Bl air after he s uffers a nervo us breakdown. B ack in Jo hn&#3 9;s study, B lair, lik e Clyde befo re him, tries t o convince John to aban don Nanc y, who no w uses t he name Patton . John, howeve r, believes N ancy when she tells h im that Blair is still suffering from his br eakdown. M oments be fore th e wedding is to start, Na ncy& #39;s futu re mothe r-in-law, the unsusp ecting Mr s. Willi s, gives her t he same locke t that she onc e took away, and tells her that it is a precious family heirl oom. The lock et causes Nan cy to be overcom e with guilt , and she coll apses at the altar in hyste rics. As Nancy is later taken aw ay to an i nstitution, J ohn sad ly realize s the t ruth of Blai r's story, bu t determines to see Nancy thr ough her cr isis.详情
