On a hot summe r afternoon in New York, Emma J ones gos sips wit h other n eighbors in her resi dential buildi ng about the affai r that Mrs. Anna Maurr ant and the milkman Steve Sankey ar e having. Wh en the rud e and unfrien dly Mr. Fr ank Maurra nt arrives, they change the subject. M eanwhile , thei r teenage daugh ter Rose Maurrant is be ing sexuall y pressured by her ma rried boss Mr. Bert East er. She does however very m uch like her kind yo ung Jewis h neighbor Sam , who h as a seri ous crush on he r. The next m orning, Fr ank Maur rant tells his wife t hat he is traveling to Stamford on busi ness. M rs. Mau rrant meets th e gentle Sankey in her apartm ent, but o ut of th e blue F rank comes back home. He realizes hi s wife is up stairs w ith Sank ey, and runs upstairs. We hear sho ts and see t he two men struggling a s Sankey tri es to es cape through the window. Maurrant runs out with a gun. He has killed Sa nkey an d fatally wound ed his wife. Ma urrant i s apprehend ed and is led away by polic e. He ap ologizes t o his daught er Rose, who wil l now have to take ca re of herse lf and her you ng brother without eithe r parent. R ose&#3 9;s boss off ers once a gain to set her up in her own apa rtment, but s he refuses. The n she se es Sam, and tells him she wants to leav e the city . Sam pl eads with her t o let hi m go with he r, but sh e tells h im it will b e better for th e two of them t o have a couple of yea rs apart before the y consider b ecoming a cou ple.
