He and th e comma nd staff le arn that the death of President Santiago was actually an assas sination m asterminde d by Vice Presi dent Clark (w ho assumed t he Presidenc y upon Santi ago& #39;s death ). A co nflict develops between the Babylon 5 com mand staf f and the Psi Corps , an increasin gly autocratic organiz ation whi ch oversees and control s the liv es of hum an telepa ths. Co mmander Ivan ova, the s econd-in-comma nd of the stati on, is secretl y a latent telepath who has illic itly avoi ded regist ering wi th the Psi C orps. The Sh adows, an ancient and extremel y powerfu l race w ho have r ecently emerged fro m hibern ation, a re revealed t o be th e cause of a variety of mysterious and dis turbing events, i ncluding the at tack on th e Narn out post at the end of 2 258. Centauri Ambassador Lond o Mollari un knowingly e nlists the ir aid th rough his as sociation with the my sterious Mr. Mor den in the ongo ing con flict wit h the Nar n. The elderl y and a iling Centa uri empero r, long an advocat e of reconcilia tion with the N arn, dies su ddenly whi le visiting Babylon 5 . A number of conspira tors, in cluding Londo Mollari and Refa , take co ntrol of the Centaur i govern ment by ass assinating th eir oppo nents and placing the lat e emperor& amp;#39;s uns table neph ew on t he throne. Their first ac t is to start o pen aggres sion against the Narn. A fter a full-sca le war breaks ou t, the Centa uri eve ntually con quer Narn in a brutal attack i nvolving mas s drivers, outlaw ed weap ons of mass destru ction. Towa rds the end of the year, the Clark a dministratio n begins to show inc reasingly to talitarian cha racteristics, clampi ng down on dissent and res tricting fre edom of speech. The Vorlons are reveal ed to be the basis of lege nds about angels on variou s worlds, including Earth, and are the ancie nt enem ies of th e Shadows.
