Salomé (1 923), a s ilent fi lm direc ted by Char les Bryant and starrin g Alla Na zimova, is a film adaptation of the Oscar Wi lde play of the same name. Th e play itself i s a loose rete lling of the biblical stor y of King Hero d and his exe cution of John the Bapt ist (here, as in W ilde&am p;#39;s play, called Jokaana n) at the request of his ste pdaughter, S alomé, who m he lusts after. S alomé is often called one of the first art fi lms to be ma de in the U.S.[cit ation needed] T he highly styliz ed costume s, exagge rated ac ting (even for the peri od), minima l sets, and ab sence of all but th e most n ecessary prop s make for a screen image mu ch more focus ed on atmospher e and o n conveying a sense of the c haracters& amp;#39; in dividua l heigh tened desires than on conventiona l plot dev elopment. De spite th e film bein g only a little over an ho ur in len gth and having no real action t o speak of, it cost over $350, 000 to make. All th e sets we re constructed indoor s to be ab le to h ave complete c ontrol over the lighting. The fil m was shot complete ly in bla ck and whi te, matc hing the il lustrations do ne by Aub rey Beardsley in the printed edition of Wi lde&#39 ;s play. The costumes, designed by Natacha Rambova , used material only from Maison Le wis of Paris, such a s the real sil ver lamé loin cloths worn by the guards. No major s tudio would be asso ciated wit h the film, and it was ye ars after its completion before it w as released , by a minor indep endent distrib utor. It was a complete failure at the time and mar ked the e nd of N azimova&am p;#39;s produc ing car eer. A lo ngstandin g rumor , which s eems to have started whi le the fi lm was still in production, suggests that its cast i s comprised ent irely of gay an d bisexual actors in an hom age to Oscar Wi lde, as p er star a nd prod ucer Nazimo va's d emand. It is, of course, impo ssible to say, but one of the extras in Salomé repo rted that a number of the cast members—b oth featured and extr as—were in deed gay, b ut not an u nusual percentag e of them, and certainl y not all of them. What can b e said i s that Nazimova herself was a le sbian, the two guard characte rs (who, ne xt to Salomé, have the most scr een tim e) are at least played very st ereotypic ally gay , and severa l of the female cou rtiers are me n in drag. Salomé was scr eened in 198 9 at the New Yo rk Internati onal Fe stival of Lesbian and Gay films and in 1990 at t he New York Gay Experimenta l Film Festival. In 2000, the United States Librar y of Congres s deemed the film & amp;quot;c ulturally signi ficant&a mp;quot; and selected it for preservation i n the Nat ional Fi lm Registry.详情
