This apocalypti c parable carries w ithin it a clear echo of the 1968 inva sion of Czecho slovakia. This unforgi ving explorati on of the Czech mentality tells the tale of a troupe of wande ring act ors who per form a pas sion play in so me unnamed vill age. Fear o f some un known danger b reaks ou t in the village, which is cut off from the surr ounding world . The dir ector Evald Schorm (19 29-1988) wa s one of the m ost orig inal members of the Czech " New Wave& ;quot;. D uring the & amp;quo t;normalizat ion&quot ; era, Schorm spent many yea rs unable to d irect. His last film, Killi ng with Kindn ess (19 88) was only m ade in th e twilight years of Comm unism.
