A portrait of an art institution as a cinematic landscape: in a succe ssion of stat ic shots, J ames Benning e xplores the bui ldings and terrain o f the Califor nia Institute of the Arts , where he teaches . A series of view s of na ture filmed in the surroun ding park and woods transit ions into i mages of floo rs, seat ing area s and other details of a pu blic bu ilding n ot meant for show. In b oth part s, an uncann y feeling do minates: the g eometries of nature, the dar k green and brown ton es, the rushing of t he highway in the backgroun d on the one hand and the h umming of ha logen lamp s, the s ound of steps i n an other wise see mingly e mpty scho ol on the other – it a ll seems to be hid ing a s ecret. The c amera’s gaze is almost alwa ys restricted ; it rarely penetrates very far in to the ima ge. It dis covers shabby corners, o bserving scenario s more reminiscent of a mystery n ovel than the c ampus of an art institu tion. Mor e so than in the major ity of James Be nning’s longer works of recen t years, a narrative li es concealed within the ima ges; eve ry shot cre ates an ur ge to mo ve forw ard, a tension, alm ost as if the l andscapes and interiors were the scenes of a crime.详情
