On DVD, borrowe d from my l ocal publ ic library, it play s at just ov er 30 m inutes with Mor gan Freeman su pplying a pleasing narrative. As one would e xpect from an IMAX film, the image quality is superb and the Dol by 5.1 soun d track is ver y well do ne. Simulate d cosmic e xplosions s hake your wall s! That is, if you have a goo d powered subwoof er in your sy stem. The f ilm takes a v ery usefu l approa ch to ex amining t he size of the un iverse, from t iny sub-atom ic particles t o the vas tness of the whole un iverse. (Fortunat ely, when Go d created the Universe he ha d dispat ched a few angels wit h video ca meras at different va ntage points so we get to see actual fo otage f rom severa l billion years ago.) T he film starts in Venice, where the dis covery of the t elescope origin ated, a nd uses a o ne-meter hoop as a referenc e point, then graduall y goes larger by power s of 10, e.g. 10 meters, 10 0, 100 0, etc u ntil we can s ee the whole univers e. Then it takes the o pposite journe y, going sm aller by po wers of 10 u ntil be see i nside sub-atomi c particle s. The st ory is w ell-wove n with b eautiful ef fects create d especially for this f ilm. It is e ntertaining and educat ional a t the sam e time. All of &q uot;oldste rs&quo t; can enjoy it fo r the s cientif ic histo ry we are alre ady familiar with, and all the &a mp;quot; youngsters " ca n enjoy it for the educ ational supp lement i t provides. Overall a mast erful f ilm. Any numerical & amp;quo t;rating& quot; of & amp;quot;Co smic Voyage&am p;quot; i s meaningle ss. If one is looking f or a superb fi lm abou t our uni verse a nd modern theories of its formatio n, this one is hard to bea t.
