The IMAX & amp;quot;Cos mic Voyage &quo t; film was made as a public ser vice with sponsorship b y the Smit hsonian Air a nd Space museum . On DVD, borr owed from my lo cal public l ibrary, it pla ys at just ove r 30 minute s with Mor gan Freeman supplying a pleasing narra tive. As one would e xpect from a n IMAX fi lm, the i mage quali ty is super b and the Dolby 5. 1 sound trac k is very we ll done. Simulated cosmic explosio ns shake yo ur walls! T hat is, if yo u have a good powered subwoo fer in yo ur system. Th e film takes a very useful approach to exam ining the size of the universe, from tiny sub -atomic particle s to the va stness of th e whole unive rse. (Fortuna tely, when God crea ted the Univ erse he had d ispatched a few angels w ith video cameras at di fferent vant age points so we get to see actual footage from seve ral billion years ago.) The film starts in Venice, where the d iscover y of the tel escope ori ginated, and uses a one-meter ho op as a refe rence poin t, then gradu ally goes larg er by po wers of 10, e.g. 10 me ters, 100 , 1000, etc until we can s ee the wh ole univers e. Then it takes the opposite journ ey, going smal ler by powers of 10 until be see in side sub-at omic particles. The stor y is well-woven with beautifu l effects cr eated espec ially fo r this film. It is e ntertaining and educ ational at the sam e time. A ll of & ;quot;oldste rs&quo t; can e njoy it for the scientific history w e are alre ady familiar wi th, and all the &qu ot;youngs ters" can enjo y it for t he educa tional su pplemen t it prov ides. Overall a masterful film. Any numerical &qu ot;ratin g&q uot; of &a mp;quot;Cosm ic Voya ge&quo t; is meaning less. If on e is looking for a superb f ilm abou t our unive rse and modern th eories o f its f ormatio n, this one is hard t o beat.
