Walking home from work one nig ht, Th ana, a mute s eamstress in N ew York City' s Garme nt District, i s raped at gu npoint in an alley by a mysterious, masked att acker. She survives and makes her way back t o her ap artment, whe re she e ncounters a bu rglar and is raped a se cond tim e. Thana bludge ons this secon d assailan t to dea th with an ir on. She then keeps his .45 calibe r M1911 A1 pistol, dismembers the burglar& #039;s body, puts the pieces into plastic garbage bags an d gradua lly dispo ses of them in various loca tions through out the cit y. She b egins to have frequent nig htmares and hal lucinations of the first assaila nt stalki ng her, and he r mental stability beg ins to dim. Thana is noticed by a man while she i s disposing of one of the bagge d body pa rts; retr ieving t he bag, he ch ases and frig htens her. Fea ring ano ther sexual ass ault, she fatal ly shoots him. This eve nt furth ers her impulse fo r venge ance. Gradual ly, Th ana transfo rms her appearance to bee a more a nd more s eductive bai t, and sets ou t to kill any m an who annoy s her. Near th e end o f the film, she dons a nun 's hab it and red li pstick to atten d a Halloween party wi th her boss and co- workers .
