The story is the usual one o f cop losing h imself whe n undercove r, however it manag es to be mo re than that for most of the time. Co-wri tten by Tolkin , who wrote Th e Player, this naturally ha s a nice cyn ical edge to it when it looks at the US 's hypocrit ical approa ch to drug co ntrol an d the political links between the street hustler s and the polit ical high rollers who c ourt re spectability. The story do es event ually settl e into a tr aditiona l setting b ut even then it works well as a thri ller. The m ulti-talented B ill Duke directs well with a gritty feel a nd a few nice touches. However several things ar e a bit iffy . For m ost of the fi lm Fishbu rne's n arration/v oice over is a bit like a cross betwe en Apocalypse Now and Blade Runner – it comes acros s as a little t oo dark and heavy a nd also ex plains t hings like w e can& #39;t fi gure it out our selves. Howeve r once you get into the film it's not as big a deal. My mai n probl em lies with the chara cters. Fish burne is excelle nt, a r eal mod el of und erlying anger and violenc e, Goldblum is good but per haps a litt le OTT on the yuppie/violence thing, but there& ;#39;s good support from Sm ith and Sp in City& #39;s b eautiful (a nd often u nderused – bu t not here) Vi ctoria Di llard. Howeve r the two main white cha racters (Goldblum and S mith) are b oth smea red with rac ist insinu ations – Smith appears to in sult his black officers and do esn't c are about the j unkies, whil e Goldblum is f ascinate d about al l things bla ck and t alks about the m as wild beaut iful beast s and l oves hav ing sex with &a mp;quot ;black&#39 ;. These th ings aren& amp;#39;t a maj or probl em, but with b asically only two whi te characters in it, it&a mp;#39; s a little worr ying that both are g iven that edg e. Howeve r these a re minor complain ts that ge t lost with a g ood thriller . Fishburne e xcels and Duke delivers a story that is a go od thrille r but also has a jaded , subver sive edge.详情
