Haunted by the memory o f Walter Holde rlin, a soldier h e kille d during W orld War I, Frenc h musician Paul Renard (P hillips Holme s) confe sses to a p riest (Fr ank Sheridan), who gran ts him ab solution. U sing the addres s on a le tter he fo und on the dead man&a mp;#39;s body, Paul then tr avels to German y to find hi s family. As a nti-French sen timent co ntinues to pe rmeate Germany, Dr. Holderli n (Lionel Barr ymore) initi ally refuses t o welcome Pau l into his home, b ut changes his mind wh en his son& amp;#39;s f iancée Elsa identifies him as the man wh o has been lea ving flowe rs on Wa lter's grave. Rather than reveal the real conn ection bet ween them , Paul tells the Hol derlin family he was a friend of th eir son, who a ttended the s ame musical con servatory he did. Although the hostile to wnspeople and lo cal gossips d isapprove, the Holde rlins be friend P aul, w ho finds himself fallin g in love with Elsa (Nan cy Carroll). Wh en she show s Paul her former fiancé' s bedroom, he becomes distraught and tells her t he truth. She convinces h im not to confe ss to Walter&a mp;#39;s pa rents, who hav e embrace d him as thei r second son, and Paul agre es to forego ea sing his c onscience and stays with his adopt ed family.
